New municipal buildings to be constructed

The Full Story

During this financial year, the Government is to begin constructing new municipal buildings, and enhance others in several parishes throughout the island.
State Minister with responsibility for Local Government, Hon. Robert Montague, has said that many municipal buildings are in a state of disrepair, noting that Council members in St. Thomas and Portmore currently occupy rented premises.
As such, the State Minister advised that new municipal buildings of some 5,600 square feet each are to be constructed in these parishes.
Mr. Montague was making his Sectoral presentation in the House of Representatives on October 26.
“We are building a new meeting room for the Council in St. Elizabeth; we are building a new accommodation for the Accounts department in Westmoreland and a new facility for the Roads and Works department in St. Mary,” he further informed.
Mr. Montague emphasised that adequate facilities will enhance the work of the municipal authorities.
“To provide proper housing for the operations of the municipal authority is the least we can do for the amount of work that is done on behalf of the communities in the various parishes,” he said.
In the meantime, the State Minister noted that a municipal services management reporting system has been introduced, that will measure, analyse and compare the performance of the various local authorities.
“We have completed the review of the Portmore Municipal Council, an experiment that was timely and that has served the citizens of Portmore well, and the review will point to the various means and ways of effectiveness and how we can improve the efficiency of that experiment and how we can roll that out,” he said.
