New Bridge Opens in Steer Town

Motorists and other users of the Steer Town main road, in St. Ann, are expressing gratitude for the new two-lane bridge that was recently constructed in the area.
The bridge, one of many built across the island under the Canadian R. A. Murray Bridge Programme, was officially opened by Minister of Transport and Works, Hon. Michael Henry, on Friday, September 10.
“I want to congratulate the R. A. Murray Bridge Programme, the contractors and the labourers who worked on this project to make it a reality,” Mr. Henry said.

Motorists using the new two-lane Steer Town bridge, in St. Ann, that was officially opened on September 10 by Minister of Transport and Works, Hon. Michael Henry.

He urged motorists to exercise caution while using the bridge, so as to prevent accidents.
“I am also warning persons not to throw any garbage in the gully, because the garbage will build up and then the water will become strong enough to cause a lot of damage to the bridge,” the Minister pointed out, and encouraged the residents to keep the drains clean.
Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of the National Works Agency (NWA), Patrick Wong told JIS News that the Steer Town Bridge was constructed at a cost of US$2.3 million (J$199 million).
“The R.A Murray Bridge Programme is one that has been fairly successful. We have been able to complete most of the bridges on time and within budget. A total of 16 bridges are to be constructed under the programme and we are in the process of completing two more bridges in Trelawny and one more in St. Thomas, and that will complete the programme,” Mr. Wong said.
Steer Town Resident, Anthony Gordon said he was more than happy for the new two-lane bridge.
“The bridge is long overdue here in Steer Town and I am happy that today we can have an easier flow of traffic in the vicinity. I remember days when I would be late for work , because of the traffic build up that used to occur on the single lane bridge,” he said.
Mr. Gordon thanked the NWA and the contractors for the work they had done in Steer Town.
Also present at the opening was the Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Hon. Audley Shaw.
