The Full Story

A contract has been signed for the construction of a new 100-man police station in Falmouth, Trelawny.National Security Minister, Dr. Peter Phillips speaking at the signing ceremony at the Ministry on Oxford Road in Kingston today (January 20), said work on the facility, which is estimated to cost some $220 million, is set to commence by January 31. It should be completed in 12 months.
Dr. Phillips said construction of the first-rate facility was necessary to ensure that communities along the North Coast have a better sense of security. The Minister informed that the building would consist of offices to house all the critical elements of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), such as a crime investigation branch, a traffic unit, a radio control unit, canine and marine divisions, a holding area for seized vehicles, recreational facilities, a regional remand centre and a cafeteria.
Dr. Phillips said the project was one of a number of construction efforts expected to take place in the near future, as the need for a proper command centre for the JCF to house all the critical elements, which were now dispersed across the Corporate Area, was becoming more apparent.
He noted that planning was already underway for a proper training facility at Twickenham Park in St. Catherine, which was part of the agenda for modernization.
“We have to move urgently to get the technological preparedness and the buildings necessary to facilitate moving into the 21st Century,” the Minister said.
In her remarks, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Jevene Bent expressed pleasure at the development, noting that the new facility would be appreciated by her colleagues.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Leon Rose, speaking on behalf of the Officers’ Association, said the new structure would provide a more pleasing environment to work in, and help to alleviate the stress on the police officers.
The contractor, Ashtrom Building Systems Limited has pledged to deliver on time with quality work.
