The Full Story

A national clean-up campaign is to get underway next week, as Government steps up its Zika Virus (ZikV) preparations and response.

The project is being undertaken by the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing through the Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme (JEEP), and the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development.

“Each Member of Parliament and Councillor will be given (monetary) allocation to help with the clean-up,” said State Minister in the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing, Hon. Richard Azan.

He was speaking at a ceremony on January 29, to showcase work done to improve the grounds of the Percy Junor Hospital in Spalding, Manchester.

Already,  several parish councils across the island have commenced clean-up activities to get rid of mosquito breeding sites.

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) did significant clean-up work over the Christmas holidays and these activities will continue.

Mr. Azan said  the Government will take very action to reduce the effects of ZikV on Jamaicans and secure a healthy nation.
