National Child Month Committee Hosts Annual Treat on Wednesday

Some 140 children will benefit from a day of fun and excitement at the National Child Month Committee’s (NCMC) annual treat slated for November 21 at Wynter’s Park, St. Catherine.
The children are from the Maxfield Park Children’s Home, Walker’s Place of Safety, Jebb Memorial Basic School, Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf, and Randolph Lopez School of Hope.
The annual treat is in observance of Universal Children’s Day today (Nov. 20). The day is designated by the United Nations (UN) as an occasion to encourage worldwide fraternity and understanding between children and also to promote the ideals and objectives of the Charter, and the welfare of the children of the world.
Tisha Ewen Smith, coordinator of the treat, told JIS News that the objective of the trip is to allow children from less privileged backgrounds to have an opportunity to enjoy a day of fun-filled activities including a talent show. She said that 160 children were invited but only 140 have confirmed.
Mrs. Ewen Smith told JIS News that this year, the committee extended the invitation to include children with disabilities. “It is the goal of the committee to be inclusive of all children,” she stated.
She noted that “over the years, the children have absolutely enjoyed themselves, especially the gift packages given, and this year should be no different.”
The children will be accompanied by teachers from their institutions, and members of the Committee and volunteers will be on hand to provide supervision and ensure that they enjoy the day.
The trip is being sponsored by Kingston Wharves Limited, which also supported last year’s event.November 20 also marks the day on which the UN Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.
