The Full Story

A coordinated multi-agency operation was conducted in downtown Kingston between August 14 and 16, aimed at ensuring businesses in that area adhere to the country’s laws.

The exercise, which included a thorough walk-through of the area, was led by the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) and involved several government entities, including the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).

During the operation, the NSWMA assessed whether businesses had valid contracts with reputable waste disposal providers, an essential requirement for maintaining proper sanitation standards in the city.

The findings revealed that approximately half of the businesses inspected were compliant.

Executive Director, NSWMA, Audley Gordon, who welcomed this outcome, said achieving compliance requires the dual approach of enforcement and education.

“While we are pleased that 50 per cent of the businesses are adhering to the regulations, there is still significant work to be done. Compliance is not just about enforcement it’s also about educating business owners on the importance of proper waste management for the health and safety of the community,” he added.

The operation also highlighted the ongoing efforts to bring non-compliant businesses up to standard.

Mr. Gordon informed that while some business owners were initially resistant, many expressed a willingness to take the necessary steps towards compliance.

“Our teams are actively working with these businesses to ensure they understand their obligations and enter into contracts with reputable waste-disposal providers,” he said.

As the NSWMA and its partner agencies continue their efforts, they remain committed to achieving full compliance among businesses in downtown Kingston, ensuring a safer and cleaner environment for all.

The NSWMA is responsible for solid waste management in Jamaica.

Its mandate entails safeguarding public health and ensuring waste is collected, stored, transported, recycled and reused or disposed of in an environmentally sound manner.
