MP Proposes Government of National Unity

July 23, 2009

The Full Story

Member of Parliament (MP) for Central Kingston, Ronald Thwaites, has called for the Government and Opposition to form a “Government of national unity.”
He made the call during his contribution to the 2009/2010 Sectoral Debate in the House, on July 22.
Mr. Thwaites said it required a sustained and institutional partnership to meet today’s challenges, rather than collaboration only when there is a national crisis.
“We need to go to our people and show first our accommodation among ourselves. When we do that they will listen,” he said. He stressed that there could be no appearance of disagreement between the parties, or the partnership would not work.
He said there was a need for a common front, a national vision and that both parties needed to have one voice on social and economic issues.
Turning to issues in his constituency, Mr. Thwaites praised the work of the National Youth Service, but suggested that the programme needed to be expanded to accommodate more at-risk youths.
“For every one we don’t place in the National Youth Service, we end up placing in the Central Police Station very often,” he said.
Mr. Thwaites also reported that progress has been made in trying to find housing for persons in his constituency, with the collaborative effort of entities, such as the Inter-American Development Bank. “I praise the co-operation between both political tendencies in the constituency for seeing that progress can be made here,” he stated.
