More than 1,000 Teachers in Summer Numeracy Programme

July 26, 2012

The Full Story

More than 1,000 teachers from across the island are being trained in a special summer programme in the area of numeracy, in an effort to improve students' performance in mathematics.

Minister, Rev. the Hon. Ronald Thwaites, who made the disclosure on July 23, during a press briefing at Jamaica House, said an additional 50 numeracy specialists will be employed by the Ministry during the 2012/13 academic year.

Rev. Thwaites pointed out that the specialists will not replace teachers, but will instead “be available to visit schools in the various regions, to (assist teachers) and improve the standard of mathematics."

He said numeracy remains an area of focus for the Ministry, as it aims to achieve 85 per cent numeracy for all children at the primary school level by 2015.

In the meantime, the Minister told journalists that all students entering the early childhood level and grade seven at the secondary level will be asked to undergo a physical screening, beginning in September.

He said the project is intended to accurately identify students who are in need of medical intervention and “thereby address some of the issues that may hinder their learning in school."

The screenings will be conducted in collaboration with the Medical Association of Jamaica, the Ministry of Health and other associated agencies.

Rev. Thwaites reminded that grade seven students are still required to complete their regular medicals as stipulated by their schools.
