Hurricane victims in Jamaica, Haiti and Grenada are to benefit from over US$11,000, which was raised through a radiothon in South Florida recently.
The radiothon was initiated by Jamaican national and radio broadcaster, Denver Silvera, and was supported by broadcasters at WAVS-AM, with Hi Class Promotions coordinating the effort.
On Wednesday (May 4) Consul General Ricardo Allicock and Haitian Consul General Ralph Latortue, accepted the cheques valued at approximately US$4,000 each, on behalf of the three countries.
The Consul Generals echoed sentiments of appreciation for the donations and for the general support extended to the Caribbean by the South Florida community.
The presentation represents the latest support from the South Florida community to assist in the region’s recovery and reconstruction efforts following hurricanes last year. Recently, Don Daly of CRI Communications, donated US $8,000 to Jamaica and Grenada, which was generated through his weekly radio programme on WVCG-1080 AM in Miami.
In addition, approximately US$6,000 was distributed to victims in Jamaica through Food for the Poor, Missionaries for the Poor, Inner City for Christ Ministries as well as the Office for National Reconstruction.
Food for the Poor also received an additional US$1,500 for victims in Grenada.
Some 600,000 residents of Caribbean descent in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach, benefit from Caribbean-formatted programming on a daily basis.
