The Full Story

More children of law-enforcement officers across the region will receive support for tertiary studies under the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP)-Motorola Solutions Foundation scholarship fund.

The US$3,000 fund was set up 10 years ago to enable Caribbean students to pursue studies at colleges and universities in the areas of engineering, communications, marketing, finance, industrial engineering, human resource management, criminology, and forensic science.

Leader for the Motorola Solutions Foundation in the Latin America and Caribbean Region (LACR), Ramón Canto, told JIS News that five more scholarships will be added to the 10 already being granted for a total of 15 awards per year.

He said the increase in the number of awards is an indication of Motorola’s commitment to the ACCP and the region.

He said that specific focus is being placed on studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to “ensure that new developments and research are done to enhance the day-to-day operations of police organisations and communities in the region”.

“Our goal is to strengthen the knowledge base of those who might have a strong inclination to join law enforcement in the future,” he noted.

Mr. Canto told JIS News that each award recipient has the option of attending a university or college in the Caribbean or institutions in countries that are associated with the ACCP member states, such as in the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and the Netherlands.

He encouraged persons to visit the offices of the Commissioner of Police to obtain information on how to apply for the programme. The application window is between May and November for 2019 enrolment.

Brithney Clarke, a second-year University of the West Indies (UWI) student and one of the three Jamaican scholarship recipients for 2017, said that the award “has provided me with a unique gift called opportunity”.

Brithney, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Integrated Marketing Communications, said that “because of the ACCP-Motorola scholarship my financial obligations for university were offset”.

“I was able to live on hall to maximise on my university experience and participate wholeheartedly, without worry, in several activities, which allowed me to maintain my balance between academics and co-curricular involvement,” she shared.

Brithney, whose mother is a member of the police force, thanked Motorola for its support and commitment to expanding the number of awards.

“Thank you for believing in the Caribbean and incentivising the efforts of hard-working and determined individuals like myself, who wish to advance through educational opportunities and community involvement. Thank you for believing in our police officers and acknowledging the work they put in to provide for their families while serving their countries. Thank you for believing in me and my abilities to excel beyond borders,” she said.

More than 85 awards have been granted under the Police (ACCP)-Motorola Solutions Foundation scholarship fund to date.

Formed in 1987, the ACCP consists of Police Commissioners from 25 Caribbean countries.

It seeks to facilitate collaboration and cooperation in the development and implementation of policing strategies, systems and procedures in the region; development of professional and technical skills of police officers; and the deployment of proactive measures to prevent crime and improve police community relations.
