Moneygram Assists with Road Safety Improvements

Remittance firm Moneygram International Limited has partnered with the Ministry of Transport and Works to undertake improvements to road safety features islandwide during the current fiscal year.
State Minister, Joseph Hibbert, in his contribution to the 2008/09 Sectoral Debate in Parliament on Wednesday (June 12), said that Moneygram has donated pedestrian crossing signs for more than 250 locations islandwide.
He noted that this undertaking, among other things, is expected to underpin comprehensive transportation plans, which are being developed for communities outside the Corporate Area.
“(Transportation) plans for the rural towns and the City of Montego Bay.will have to be heavily supported by improvements along the roadways, such as reclaiming sidewalks from parked vehicles, for the use of the pedestrians,” the State Minister said.
The Ministry, he outlined, will carry out a programme of road markings, including centre lines, pedestrian crossings, and stop bars islandwide. The centre line markings, he explained, are expected to significantly enhance road safety at nights, adding that Moneygram has given a commitment to further assist with the overall effort.
“The company has given its commitment to provide the additional material required to carry out the re-painting of all pedestrian crossings islandwide (and), I thank Moneygram for this generous offer,” Mr. Hibbert said.
He also urged persons to stop the illegal practice of creating pedestrian crossings.
“Some (crossings) are painted with illegal colour schemes, while others have been established at inappropriate locations on the roads. During the re-painting programme, the officers will make the necessary corrections and it is hoped that thereafter, the illegal practice will cease,” Mr. Hibbert said.
