The Full Story

The Government will spend $19.2 million to improve the levels of innovation by building and strengthening capacities in the areas of Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I).

Funding for this initiative is being provided by the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States.

The money has been set aside in the 2017-18 Estimates of Expenditure now before the House of Representatives.

Implemented by the Scientific Research Council (SRC), it is expected that the project will target science education as an enabler of poverty reduction, growth and socio-economic development of Caribbean countries.

Achievements of the project to date include the hosting of two summer camps, the handover of science laboratory items to eight selected schools, and the hosting of professional development workshops for teachers.

In the long term, the project is expected to make recommendations to policy- makers based on findings and results, to inform ST&I educational policy and upgrade science centres, train at least 30 teachers in science education and develop training materials for teacher workshops.
