Mobay Rotary Club’s Bikeathon Aids Scholarships

Eleven students from St. James, who are enrolled in high schools and tertiary institutions, have been awarded scholarships totaling $350,000 by the Rotary Club of Montego Bay East.
The scholarships were presented to them during the Rotary Club’s Bikeathon/Jamaica Challenge 2010 Scholarship Presentation Ceremony, at the Sunset Beach Resort, Spa and Water Park in Montego Bay Thursday (October 21).
In congratulating both the awardees and presenters of the scholarships, Principal of Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College, Asburn Pinnock, said that the Rotary Club was assisting families to ensure they gain their vision through well needed resources for students to continue their dream of self-fulfillment.
“This programme, made possible by the Rotary, represents an investment, not only in the students, but also in our country Jamaica. It’s also an investment in our people, wealth and enterprises,” Dr. Pinnock said.
He stated that the participants in the Bikeathon rode from Montego Bay to Duncans with an idea.
“They knew what they wanted to do, but they did not know who would benefit and, today, we see well-deserving students that are the beneficiaries of this selfless act”, he pointed out.
He said that the Rotary Club, by providing resources for students, was aiding in the development of Jamaica’s most valuable resource, it’s human resource, while the awardees have been provided with the means of achieving their hopes and objectives.
“You therefore now have the responsibility to use these funds wisely, to maximize the potentials to capitalize on this opportunity, so that you would one day be able to help someone else”, Dr. Pinnock told the awardees.
