June 29, 2009

The Full Story

The Ministry of Justice has begun discussions with the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce to explore the possibility of the private sector building courthouses for acquisition by the Government on a lease and sale basis.
Speaking Wednesday evening (June 24, 2009) during the opening of the Port Antonio Resident Magistrate’s Court in Boundbrook, Portland, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Senator the Hon. Dorothy Lightbourne says private sector partnership will play a major role in the plans to modernise court infrastructure islandwide.
The Justice Minister says the Ministry is seeking technical architectural assistance from the private sector for the preparation of a Court Facilities Master Plan.
“The Ministry contemplates the development of a uniformed design that will produce a standardised arrangement for all courts across the island,” Senator Lightbourne said.
Senator Lightbourne added that a Cabinet submission was prepared seeking approval for architectural services to expand the Supreme Court and Registry, at the former NCB building at 52-54 King Street.
National Commercial Bank provided $280 million dollars for the construction of the new Courthouse which was handed over to the Ministry on August 24, 2008.
“Subsequent to this handing over, the Government spent an additional $35 million dollars to make it functional”, Senator Lightbourne noted.
According to Minister Lightbourne, if the Justice system is to be fixed, partnerships with all stakeholders are not only desirable they are essential.
“This project is an example of what can be achieved when the Government, particularly the justice sector works together with the private sectors as partners.”
