Ministry of Health to Commence $500 Million Rehabilitation Programme

Minister of Health and Environment, Rudyard Spencer, has announced that a $500 million rehabilitation programme is to commence this year on health facilities.
He pointed out that discussions have been held with the National Health Fund (NHF) for the financing of the project.
The Minister was making his contribution to the 2008/09 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives, today (June 3).
Mr. Spencer informed that 20 health centres would be repaired under the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) Hurricane Dean Emergency Recovery Loan Project, at a cost of US$1 million (J$71 million).
He also pointed out the Ministry was advanced in its plans to build a new Type 3 health centre under the US Southern Command HAP Construction Project in the Greenwich Town area. The Minister added that the new health centre in James Hill, Clarendon would be completed during this year.
The health centres to be repaired include Watermount, Parks Road, Rollington Town, Harbour View, Sydenham, Stony Hill, Windward Road and Norman Gardens in the South East Region; Fruitful Vale, Nonsuch, Moore Town and Fairy Hill in the Northeast Region; May Pen, Christiana, Race Course and Toll Gate in the Southern Region; and Duncans, Lucea, Dias and Bethel Town from the Western Region.
“I have instructed the team at the Ministry to carry out an inspection of our facilities and to see what repairs can be carried out in light of the hurricane season,” Mr. Spencer said.
