Ministry of Education Announces 82 GSAT Scholarships for 2010

The Ministry of Education revealed Tuesday (July 6) that 82 scholarships, including 33 Government scholarships, have been awarded to successful 2010 GSAT students from primary, all-age, junior high and preparatory schools, islandwide.

Top boy scholar is Daniel Lawla of St. Richard's Primary, Red Hills Road, Kingston. Two girls tied for top girl scholar, they are Kadian Farquharson of Lannaman's Preparatory, Kingston and Anya Chuck of Hosanna Kindergarten and Preparatory, Montego Bay.
The three were awarded the Scotia Bank Foundation Top Boy and Top Girl scholarships.
The top four recipients of named Government scholarships are: Shaquille Crosse of Allman Town Primary, Kingston, who won the Marcus Garvey Scholarship; Jae-Anne Smith of St. Richards Primary, Kingston, who won the JAG Smith Scholarship; Jesse James of Black River Primary and Infant, St. Elizabeth, who won the George William Gordon Scholarship; and Hanif Brown of Airy Castle Primary, St. Thomas, who won the Paul Bogle Scholarship.
Other Government of Jamaica scholarships were awarded to 15 boys and 14 girls from primary, preparatory and private schools.Fourteen boys and 14 girls are usually selected for the scholarships, however 15 boys were chosen this year, as two boys tied for one of the scholarships.
Private sector scholarship donors included ScotiaBank, Sagicor Life Jamaica Limited, Guardian Life, Petrojam Limited, Horlicks and Jamaica National Building Society.
The top four scholarships awarded by the Government of Jamaica are valued at $180,000 each, while the other 28 scholarships are valued at $100,000 each.
