Ministries to Iron out Challenges Regarding ‘Jamaica 50’ Activities

Cabinet has instructed collaboration among a number of Ministries to address concerns regarding the implementation of the national programme to commemorate Jamaica’s 50th   Anniversary of Independence.

The Ministries are Youth and Culture; Tourism and Environment; Industry, Investment and Commerce; and Finance and Planning.

Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, addressing Wednesday’s (March 21) Jamaica House media briefing, said that Cabinet was advised of the challenges being faced by the Youth and Culture Ministry in implementing the programme of activities.

These include the global celebration of ‘Jamaica 50’ over the period August 5 to 6, 2012; Heritagefest, from October 14 to 17; youth and community focus; the Jamaica 50 Christmas Family Reunion; and a number of legacy projects.

Additionally, she informed, Cabinet also looked at the various ways in which modern technological platforms can be utilised to promote Jamaica 50, and discussed the series of activities to take place across the Diaspora, particularly in the United Kingdom, United States of America (USA), and Canada.

“The (Ministries) were asked to collaborate on (the) issues raised, in terms of determining the scope and financial considerations for the proposed Jamaica 50 celebrations…and ensure that the current fiscal constraints of the Government are kept at the forefront of their discussions,” Senator Falconer informed.
