The Full Story

The Honorable Olivia “Babsy” Grange, Minister of Information Culture, Youth and Sports, says that her Ministry is fully aware of the importance of rewarding the young people of Jamaica for their initiatives and innovative programmes to empower themselves to become “well rounded progressive citizens of their country.”
Minister Grange said her Ministry had ensured that all functioning registered community youth organizations had been provided with grants to serve as seed money for various fundraising activities.
“The most recent disbursement done through the National Centre for Youth Development saw a total of two million-six-hundred and fifty-thousand dollars being distributed to one hundred and six community-based youth clubs, each receiving twenty-five thousand dollars,” Miss Grange announced at a function held today at the Altamont Court Hotel which reviewed the work being done by the NYCD.
She said the disbursement of the subvention coincided with a number of capacity building workshops which provided the members of the respective organizations with the requisite skills to effectively manage their organizations and productively use their subventions.
The Minister said uniformed groups will also benefit from financial assistance from the NYCD and will be issued with their subventions before the end of this year.
Miss Grange said that it was the Ministry’s hope that the various youth groups would use the money received in an economically efficient way. “This is just one of many initiatives that the Government through the NYCD has spearheaded to ensure that Jamaica’s youth are given the assistance needed to lead the nation in a new era of patriotism thus championing positive change for national greatness.”
Speaking at the same function, Mrs. Roberta Ellis, NYCD Director, said that the Centre, which is in its eighth year of existence, “has been uniquely positioned to effect change in the lives of our young people.”
Mrs. Ellis said that the NYCD staff was knowledgeable and passionate about the youth and the issues which affect them and were determined to help every young person to overcome “the gravity of the situations they faced.”
She said the Centre had done well.
National Youth Month is being observed as usual in this month of November and the theme this year is “I Can, We Can, Youth Can Achieve Greatness”.
