The Full Story

Minister of Local Government, Community Development and Sport, Portia Simpson Miller has lauded the Life of Jamaica (LOJ) Insurance Company and its High Flyers Club on their commitment to give back to the community as part of their corporate social responsibility.
Minister Simpson Miller noted that LOJ’s sense of corporate social responsibility spanned health, culture, education and sports with the company contributing approximately $18 million to no less than 30 charities and was in keeping with the Ministry’s vision and mission of bringing the broadest range of partnerships to the task of building viable communities.
The Minister was speaking at the LOJ High Flyers Club 1st Quarter 2005 Appreciation Luncheon held recently at the Jamaica Pegasus in Kingston.
The Local Government Minister noted also, that LOJ boasted a range of skills that were needed for community development as within the LOJ workforce were top class managers, sales and marketing experts, trained teachers, social workers, artistes, cultural agents, sportsmen and women among others.
“Imagine the difference this pool of skills and talent could make to economic and community development, as it is by these and other means that we help to rebuild social capital in communities and society at large,” she stated.
Mrs. Simpson Miller implored other organizations to emulate this type of responsibility because it was only as partners that the country would be better able to renew community infrastructure, build skills, change social relations and stimulate the change needed for a better society.
“Let us pull together on all fronts as together we can help to eliminate poverty, promote self reliance and relax differences within certain communities, by widening prospects for economic growth for a more productive citizenry,” she said.
The Minister added that in the private and public business world, High Flyers were expected to produce consistently at the highest level and noted that whatever their field, they were expected to exercise creativity and remain customer-centred.
She further noted that High Flyers must think long-term, have an eye for improving product quality, demonstrate commitment and institutional loyalty and have a sense of corporate social responsibility. These characteristics, she said, had been demonstrated by LOJ’s High Flyers and for that they were being duly recognized.
The Minister challenged all the High Flyers present to continue to improve their professional work, thinking of the welfare of others beginning at the community level.
The First Quarter High Flyers Club Members were drawn from the Mandeville, Belmont Dukes, Spanish Town, Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, Knutsford, Liguanea, Half Way Tree and Corporate Circle Branches.
