Minister Says Energy Saving Light Bulb Programme will Resume

July 3, 2009

The Full Story

Minister of Energy and Mining, Hon. James Robertson, has said that his Ministry is pursuing the resumption of the Cuban Energy Saving Light Bulb Programme.
“Any programme that involves energy conservation is welcomed by this administration, and I would once again like to take this opportunity to thank the Government and people of Cuba for their generous donation,” Mr. Robertson said.
He was making his contribution to the 2009/10 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday (July 1).
He said that discussions have begun with Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Olivia Grange, and Education Minister, Hon. Andrew Holness, as well as the Social Development Commission (SDC) and the National Youth Service (NYS), in order to identify relatively inexpensive, non-commercial avenues for the continued delivery of the project.
In 2007, approximately four million energy saving fluorescent light bulbs were donated to Jamaica by the Government of Cuba, for distribution to householders at all income levels, free of cost.
As part of the programme, a Cuban team conducted a pilot project in East Kingston and Eastern St. Andrew, where more than 70,000 bulbs were distributed.
