The Full Story

Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining (MSTEM), Hon. Phillip Paulwell, will tomorrow (Jan. 28) launch the 2016 KingstOOn animation conference and film festival, which is slated for March 12 to 13 in the capital city.

The blast off event will get underway at 11:00 am at Jampro’s Business Auditorium in New Kingston.

State Minister, Hon. Julian Robinson, as well as World Bank Country Director, Galina Sotirova, will also be in attendance.

The two-day conference and Afrodescendant film festival, under the theme: ‘Learn, Earn and Display,’ is an initiative of the Government of Jamaica in collaboration with the World Bank and the Caribbean Development Bank.

It is the second staging of the event, which provides an avenue for Jamaica’s growing number of animators to showcase their talent, while honing their skills through workshops, competitions and interactions with established animators.

The website for the festival was launched on November 20, 2015, with submissions for the festival competitions opening the same day.

The inaugural festival, in 2013, received 135 entries and 973 registered participants.

KingstOOn 2016 will seek to engage youth from the Caribbean region and provide them with an opportunity to explore animation as a lucrative profession, as well as attract international players from the Afrodescendant space.
