The Full Story

Minister of Education, Andrew Holness, earlier this week, officially opened new classroom blocks at Cross Keys and Bishop Gibson High Schools in Manchester.
The projects were completed at a combined cost of $40.5 million, under the Ministry’s Critically Needed Secondary School Spaces Programme. Under phase 1 of the programme, 11 high schools, including Bishop Gibson High and Cross Keys, were selected to be extended.
At Cross Keys, $19.5 million was spent to construct a two-storey block with four classrooms, inclusive of a biology laboratory, with a total floor area of 499 square meters. A 94-square metre sanitary block was also a part of the project.
Minister Holness, in his remarks at the Cross Keys function, expressed pleasure at the work done, which he said, is “an effort by the Ministry of Education to meet the requirement for space that is building up in this region and indeed in the neighbouring parishes of Clarendon and St. Catherine.”
He commended the principal, staff and students on the well-kept school grounds and urged them to take similar care of the new facilities provided. “I am impressed just looking at the school surroundings how it is kept. You do take pride in your school environment and I would encourage you to keep it up,” he stated.
“The way we deal with our surroundings says a lot about what we value and if you value a clean environment and a neat environment, then you are well on your way to creating an orderly society,” he added. After brief stops at Bethabara Primary and Junior High and Bethabara Basic School, the Minister journeyed to Bishop Gibson High, to open the new facilities built at a cost of $21 million.
The scope of work done at Bishop Gibson included the demolition of an existing building and constructing a three-storey block with five classrooms, a chemistry laboratory, as well as male and female sanitary conveniences. The floor area for the new block is 416 square metres.
