Minister Kellier to Attend International Labour Conference in Geneva

Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Derrick Kellier, is to attend the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, between June 17 and 19.

Minster with responsibility for Information, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, said Cabinet has approved the official travel of the Minister and a seven-member delegation, which will cost approximately $3 million.

Speaking at a Jamaica House media briefing on May 22, the Minister pointed out that the International Labour Conference has helped Jamaica to address important matters and obtain technical support for issues, such as child labour, migrant workers and HIV/AIDs.

“The International Labour Organization has also collaborated with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security in the development of a rural component of the Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme (JEEP), which will require $100 million for implementation. Funding for the project will be discussed at the conference,” Minister Falconer said.

She informed that this year’s conference will focus on: “Employment and social protection in the new demographic context and sustainable development, decent work and Green Jobs, among other things.”

Minister Falconer further informed that the Minister will be accompanied on his trip by President of the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions, Mr. Lloyd Goodleigh; Chief Executive Officer of the Jamaica Employers Federation, Mrs. Brenda Cuthbert; President of the Jamaica Civil Service Association, Oneil Grant; President of the Jamaica Teachers Association, Clayton Hall; Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Alvin McIntosh; Director of Industrial Relations in the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Mrs. Lorna Phillips and Director of the National Insurance Scheme, Mrs. Portia Magnus.
