Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, is lauding the staging of the annual Jamaica National (JN) Racers Grand Prix, noting that it is helping to establish Jamaica as a premier venue for international sports.

“(We want) to make Jamaica a venue for international sports; for competition and for hosting meetings of international sports federations. We believe there are significant social and economic benefits to be gained from establishing Jamaica as the place of choice to play, watch and discuss sports,” she said.

Ms. Grange was speaking at the press launch of the 2018 meet on Thursday (April 19) at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston,

The event is slated to be held on Saturday, June 9 at the National Stadium in Kingston.

President of Racers Track Club, Dr. the Hon. Glen Mills, said that the event, now in its third year, is a vital resource in preserving Jamaica’s rich athletic heritage.

“The main purpose of having a meet of this nature is to bring to our shores, world-class athletes competing against each other and, at the same time, allow second tier and young athletes to witness these performances in live action. We have found that this competitive atmosphere stimulates our young athletes. As we see our young athletes display the talent pool for the future, we continue to provide this kind of initiation and experience that will help them tremendously,” he said.

He informed that several top local and international athletes have been confirmed for the highly anticipated event, and discussions are ongoing with others.

Some of the athletes confirmed in the women’s100 metre are World Athletics Championships 100-metre champion, Tori Bowie; 100-metre silver medallist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Christania Williams; Commonwealth Games 200-metre silver medallist, Shericka Jackson, and bronze medallist in the 800 metres Natoya Goule.

 

Also slated to compete are bronze medallist in the Commonwealth Games, Yohan Blake; World Indoor 60-metre silver medallist, Jarret Eaton; as well as Commonwealth Games silver medallist in the 110-metre hurdles, Hansle Parchment.

The meet, scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m., will feature 17 events. The preliminary list includes 13 international events – women’s 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, triple jump, shot put and 400m hurdles and for men – 100m, 200m, 400m, 110m hurdles, discus throw and high jump. There will also be four Olympic development events.

Tickets for the 2018 JN Racers Grand Prix will go on-sale (online) on May 1, 2018.
