Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, The Honourable Olivia “Babsy” Grange, has said that with the passing of Christopher Gonzalez, Jamaica has lost a sculptor and painter of distinction.
Minister Grange, in paying tribute to Gonzalez, said he was a true pioneer, whose works never failed to grab attention even if they were sometimes controversial.
She said that unconventional though it might have been, the statue he created of Reggae icon Bob Marley was outstanding. “One thing was sure, Christopher Gonzalez was extraordinarily talented,” Miss Grange said.
She said that up and coming sculptors and painters could benefit from paying attention to style and techniques of Gonzalez who died last Saturday at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay at the age of 65.
Minister Grange expressed sympathy to the wife and children of the sculptor and artist.
