Minister Daryl Vaz to Launch Public Sector Customer Service Competition

July 2, 2008

The Full Story

Minister of State with responsibility for project implementation and service delivery in the Office of the Prime Minister, Daryl Vaz, will on Thursday (July 3) launch the fourth biennial Public Sector Customer Service Competition at Jamaica House starting at 10:00 a.m.
The competition evolved from the Citizen’s Charter/Customer Service programme which began in 1994 under the public sector modernization initiative. One element of the programme was the development of Citizen’s Charter by government agencies, to inform the public of the services offered under their portfolio and the standards at which these must be delivered. The objective was to strengthen service delivery through the creation of an efficient, effective and customer-oriented public sector. To date one hundred and eight agencies have developed or published a Citizen’s Charter.
The Pubic Sector Customer Service Competition is organized by the Public Sector Modernization Division in the Cabinet Office and seeks to promote and encourage commitment to and continuous improvement in the quality of service delivery to the public, by recognizing and rewarding efforts of government agencies to improve service delivery. Each public sector agency is eligible to participate in all categories of the competition, but only those with a Citizen’s Charter are eligible for the Best Customer Service Agency Award.
Minister Vaz will on Thursday give details of the competition as well as outline how the public can participate in the exercise which will be spread over a nine month period. Winners will be announced in March 2009.
