Mini-Stadium for St. Mary

August 17, 2009

The Full Story

St. Mary is to get a mini-stadium ready for use before Christmas. Located beside Jacks River, near James Bond beach, it will have an international size football field and an eight-lane athletic track, two hard courts for tennis and seating for the public.
Prime Minister the Hon. Bruce Golding was taken on a tour of the construction site, just before he broke ground for the expansion of Golden Eye, in Oracabessa on Friday, August 14. The tour, conducted by Minister of State with responsibility for Local Government Reform and Member of Parliament for West St Mary, Hon. Robert Montague, was joined by Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister, with responsibility for Information, Telecommunications and Special Projects, Hon. Daryl Vaz.
“We are looking to put on turf in another two weeks, and then that has to be grown out for another month and then cut back. So, we expect that somewhere before Christmas, we should be playing our first match,” Mr. Montague said.
The project is a joint venture between the Government and Chris Blackwell’s Island Outpost, which is responsible for the expansion of the Golden Eye, which will see the construction on the Beach Village of 11 beach cottages, a new suspension bridge, and a beachfront restaurant. Island Outpost says the expansion programme will see the re-introduction of the classic Caribbean cottages, incorporating the designs by award winning Jamaican architect, Ann Hodges.
