Mike Henry Opens new Fairfield/Tucker Bridge in Mobay

Minister of Transport and Works, Hon. Mike Henry, on Friday (May 14) cut the ribbon to signal the official opening and commissioning into service of the Fairfield/Tucker Bridge near Montego Bay, St. James.
The new bridge, designed to accommodate two lanes of traffic, was constructed at a cost of US$1.9 million ($169 million). It replaces the single lane structure which previously served the greater South St. James area. It was one of several activities performed by the Minister, during a three-day, Wednesday-Friday, working stay in the city.
The new structure now sits on piles with a concrete abutment, and is equipped with sidewalks, guard rails and other safety measures.

The Minister said he was pleased with the finished product, as it was a very important transport corridor directly connecting to the $1.3 billion Bogue Road project.
“It has been brought in on time and within budget, and I believe that the community will be thankful and surely will benefit greatly from this bridge,” he said.
He paid tribute to the National Works Agency (NWA), by Canadian engineering firm, R.A. Murray International Limited, and other persons and groups involved with the project. He also urged the public, particularly motorists, to use the roads carefully and make them safer for all.
Member of Parliament for the area, Clive Mullings, was on hand to celebrate the opening of the bridge. He thanked the Minister for his initiative in bringing the project to reality.

He said the bridge would uplift the area and improve traffic flow, and thanked the Minister on behalf of the constituency, “for this first class piece of work, compared to the former narrow and dangerous bridge that was in use.”
“Certainly, the quality of the work done here is very impressive, and I want to thank you very much Minister,” Mr. Mullings said.
The bridge was built under the National Works Agency’s (NWA) R.A. Murray Priority Bridge Programme, in which some 17 structures are being built across the island.
