Methodists to Plant 250 trees to Mark 250th Anniversary this Year

Methodists across the Caribbean and the Americas are marking the 250th Anniversary of the church’s mission in the region, with a tree planting project.
The Jamaica District will on Saturday (May 15) launch the occasion with a tree planting project at Egypt, Brown’s Town, St Ann.
Methodists from across the island are expected to participate in the event. The President of the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas (MCCA), Rev. Dr. George Mulrain, will launch the project is aimed at establishing 50 acres of lumber trees over a 3-5 year period.
President of the Methodist Church in Jamaica, Rev Everald Galbraith, said that the tree planting exercise is intended to be part of the church’s commitment to use its idle lands to help finance its work. In addition to income generation, the initiative is also in response to the church’s mission to Rise and Build and to be stewards of God’s creation.
As part of the Anniversary celebrations, Saturday’s exercise will see the planting of 250 trees on ten acres at the 105-acre Egypt property.
Methodism was first introduced to the Caribbean by Nathaniel Gilbert in Antigua in 1760, some 22 years after it was founded by Anglican clerics, John and Charles Wesley in England.
The MCCA is the oldest Methodist Church Organization outside of Great Britain and has congregations in almost all English-speaking Caribbean territories as well as in; French-speaking Guadeloupe, St Martin and Haiti; Spanish-speaking Panama, Costa Rica and Honduras; and Dutch-speaking Aruba, Curacao, St Maarten and St Eustatius. There is a congregation in the Netherlands.
Methodists believe that all persons are sinners, and that all sinners can be saved by faith in Jesus.
The Tree Planting Project is only one of several activities being organised by the Jamaica District, during the Anniversary year. Others include islandwide open air services, lectures, prayer breakfast, quiz competitions in Methodist schools and a grand 250th anniversary dinner to be held on the lawns of King’s House in July.
