JIS News

This year, in the midst of the economic hardships, public chastisements and threats of violence, we seek to observe May 5-11, 2013 as Education Week, under the theme, Advancing the Nation’s Human Capital through Education.

Education Week is packed with activities geared at enhancing the cause of education and teachers as they struggle to educate Jamaican children and youth so that the 2030 vision of Jamaica becoming the place of choice to live, work, raise families and do business can be realized.

As we again focus public attention on the role of education in developing our human resources, we call on those in authority to see investments in education as an investment in the future, recognizing that any money saved from education will be expended twice over in the criminal justice system.

The JTA pledges its support to the Minister of Education in his focus on early childhood education and ask that he uses his high office to ensure the inclusion of trained teachers in all basic schools. The allocation of funds to compensate those already appointed would signify the real value placed on this sector.

Teachers, fellow educators, together we grapple with several issues in education and these will continue to get the JTA’s attention as we move forward in education.

You can count on us. We have your interest at heart. We will NOT let you down, as UNITED WE STAND for education. Let’s fight for what is right, let’s perform, as that is both a requirement as it is the people’s demand and let’s not grow daunted as this would surely indicate a serious weakness on your part.

I leave you with a few ideas from the paradoxical commandments of Dr. Kent Keith.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

May the Lord continue to guide and guard you as we Unite and Serve.
