Mental Health Officers Assisting in Recovery Programme

Mental health officers from the Ministry of Health have been making visits across the island to talk to persons experiencing feelings of despair, following the passage of Hurricane Ivan four weeks ago. Health Minister, John Junor made this revelation during a recent address to the House of Representatives.
“The mental health officers have paid visits to communities and [have been] talking to persons about the signs and symptoms of post traumatic stress and have done sessions in schools,” the Minister pointed out.
He added that in addition to their community visits, the mental health officers “have also visited a number of individuals who have been traumatised”.Mr. Junor noted that the Ministry of Health had continued to receive donations from concerned and generous agencies and individuals.
He reported that donations had totalled $34.8 million, “most of which are medical and environmental health supplies”.
The Minister informed that the agencies that had made donations included the Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Red Cross, the Mexican Embassy, the Venezuelan Embassy, Nestle Jamaica Limited, Cable and Wireless Jamaica Limited, the National Health Fund, Food for the Poor, and several others.
