Members of Northern Task Force Leave for St. Kitts and Nevis

March 12, 2007

The Full Story

The Northern Task Force comprising security personnel from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) left the island this morning (March 12), for deployment in St. Kitts and Nevis, which will be hosting Group stage matches during the ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2007.
Members of the group are to provide additional security for matches, which commence on March 14, with the match between Australia and Scotland.
Lieutenant Colonel Bruce Lovell, Communication Co-ordinator for the CARICOM Operational Planning and Co-ordinating Staff (COPACS), told JIS News that the task force would be in St. Kitts and Nevis until March 25.
From there, the contingent will depart for Antigua, where the members will provide additional security for the Super 8 matches, which will bowl off there on March 27.
“The amount of personnel who have been deployed have been deemed adequate to provide assistance to the St. Kitts security forces as well as the Antiguan security forces,” he said.
These forces will afterward head on to Barbados, who will host the Final of the ICC CWC 2007 on April 28.
This movement of personnel forms part of the security arrangements co-ordinated by COMPACS, which is the body charged with the responsibility of some of the security arrangements that affect the region in respect to hosting the ICC CWC 2007.
“The Heads of CARICOM deemed that to adequately cover the security requirements for the event, no one country would have had the resident resources, so the decision was made to pool together all the security resources of the region and create a regional security plan catering to ICC CWC 2007,” Lt. Col. Lovell explained.
He said that an aspect of the plan envisaged the deployment of personnel throughout the Caribbean. “The task force is divided into two – there is taskforce North, which comprise personnel from Jamaica and the Regional Security System and taskforce South, which is made up of members from the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force and Police Force, the Regional Security System and the Guyana Defence Force,” he pointed out.
Taskforce South has already been deployed to St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and St. Lucia and will move on to the final in Barbados in April.
For the first time in the history of the Cricket World Cup, some nine countries in the Caribbean will play host. They include Antigua and Barbuda, Jamaica, Guyana, St. Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, St. Lucia, Barbados and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
