Minister of Health Hon. Rudyard Spencer, says a number of measures will be taken to strengthen the capacity of the National Blood Transfusion Service. Speaking at his monthly press briefing on Thursday (January 21), Minister Spencer said the finding of the audit report ordered by Permanent Secretary, Dr. Jean Dixon in November last year pointed to weak inventory systems and controls and weaknesses in the area of procurement.
The audit became necessary as reported shortage of blood bags raised concerns about robustness of systems and processes at the Blood Bank. He says a number of corrective measures have been taken to address the areas of weakness.
“These include implementing an inventory management system, full utilisation of the Lab Information System and redeployment of staff to fill critical gaps in areas such as inventory management and procurement. In addition standard operating procedures and manuals are being developed in areas,” he said.
