May 24 and 25 Clean-Up Days in Windsor, Portland

Residents of Windsor, in the Rio Grande Valley area of Portland, have designated May 24 and 25 as community clean-up days, as part of a mosquito eradication programme in the area.
The programme will be carried out jointly with the Portland Health Department, with support from other organisations, including the Portland Parish Council and the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).
Mosquitoes have been a nuisance in the community and investigations conducted by the Portland Health Department have identified a drain in the area as the major source of the problem.
Speaking at a community meeting, jointly sponsored by the Portland Health Department and the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), in Windsor on May 5, to sensitise residents about the importance of the clean-up programme, Public Health Inspector, Khadine Richards said it was of critical importance for the problem to be addressed as early as possible, because of the health risks.
Noting that surveys conducted by the Portland Health Department had indicated that mosquito infestation was the most outstanding health issue existing in the area, she said the first day of the clean-up campaign would be used to clean the drain, while on the second day, the focus would be on the general cleaning up of the community and the proper disposal of the garbage collected.
Ms. Richards said the NSWMA and the Portland Parish Council have given their commitment to work closely with the members to ensure the success of the programme. She added that the Member Parliament for Eastern Portland, Dr. Donald Rhodd, has also given his commitment to assist.
