Math Teachers to Benefit from Training Workshops

Several primary school mathematics teachers will, in April, participate in development workshops aimed at enhancing competence in the subject.

The training sessions, organised by the Seprod Group of Companies, are being undertaken in conjunction with the Ministry of Education. They will be held in regions one, two, four and six on April 10, 11, 19 and 26, respectively.

Chief Operating Officer, Seprod Group of Companies, Carl Domville, who made the disclosure at the recent launch of the 2013 Seprod National Primary Schools’ Mathematics Competition, said the sessions will be recorded and the material provided to the Ministry for wide distribution.

He said that this was based on a request from Education Minister, Rev. the Hon.  Ronald Thwaites, to make the workshop content more accessible to a wider pool of teachers.

Mr. Domville said the workshops represent a holistic approach to promoting excellence in mathematics. “It is our sincere belief that if we have outstanding math teachers then it will translate into outstanding math students,” he stated.

Students from primary schools across the island are invited to participate in the 2013 Seprod National Primary Schools’ Mathematics Competition, the finals of which will be held on May 9 at centres across the island.

The prize-giving ceremony will take place in Kingston on June 21, where more than $300,000 in cash, trophies and prizes will be awarded. The winner will receive $50,000 and the Seprod Champion’s Trophy.
