September 29, 2009The Full Story
The 46th Port Antonio International Blue Marlin Tournament got underway today (September 28), at the Port Antonio Marina, in Portland. It was officially opened by Custos of the parish, the Hon. Roy Thompson.
The tournament, which will last until Friday, October 2, has attracted a total of 26 boats. Organised by the Sir Henry Morgan Angling Association, the tournament is a major activity on the annual calendar of events in Port Antonio.
During the tournament the anglers will be in vigorous competition to gain the top prize, by catching the biggest marlin. Fishing will continue on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, while on Wednesday, there will be the 25th canoe tournament, in which fishermen will seek to outdo each other in fishing.
Some 40 canoes are scheduled to participate in that event, which will involve fishermen from Portland, St. Mary and St. Ann.
In declaring the tournament open, Mr. Thompson welcomed the anglers to Port Antonio, and congratulated the Sir Henry Morgan Angling Association for the work it has done to organise the event.
Expressing the wish that the anglers will enjoy the competition and all that Port Antonio has to offer during their stay in the town, he expressed confidence that the hospitality for which the people of the town are well known, will be extended to them in the best way.
