Maritime Authority to Develop Jamaica Ship Registry

May 31, 2007

The Full Story

The Maritime Authority of Jamaica will be developing the Jamaica Ship Register (JSR) this fiscal year, as part of efforts to increase its income generation sources.
“The (Maritime Authority) will target the yachting sector, which has been largely untapped by the JSR and the legal framework is currently being developed to facilitate Jamaica’s entry into this lucrative market,” said Minister of Housing, Transport, Water and Works, Robert Pickersgill said while making his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives yesterday (May 30). He noted that a “significant increase in the number of vessels registered under the Jamaican flag, will create a fillip to the development of allied maritime services and to Jamaica becoming an international centre.”
Recognising the potential of the shipping industry to boost the economy and increase Jamaica’s foreign exchange earnings, the Maritime Authority plans to actively continue to promote the development of allied shipping services within the economy.
“The foreign and local banking and insurance sectors will be targeted to provide marine insurance and financing for vessels flying the Jamaican flag.
Additionally, a full range of other ancillary services such as dry-docking and ship brokering will also be promoted locally to support our maritime industry,” said Mr. Pickersgill.
Officially launched in 2000, the JSR allows ship owners worldwide to register their vessels under the Jamaican flag, where they benefit from incentives including 24-hour access to the country’s ports, prompt service and tax breaks as well as reasonable rates and quality service through its marine survey and technical support programme.
