Margaret Moody Scholarship Open to Disabled Persons

Persons with disabilities who have entered a local tertiary institution to pursue a first degree or diploma may now apply for the Margaret Moody Bequest Scholarships, offered by the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities.
Speaking with JIS News, Chairman of the Margaret Moody Trust Fund, Dr. Gordon Cowan, noted that the scholarship is open to persons who are registered with the Council and is valued at $100,000 for each year of study.
“Each year we award at least two scholarships, however, we have been known to grant more and sometimes bursaries are also given depending on the circumstances,” he explained. Interested persons may obtain registration forms from the headquarters of the Council located at 18 Ripon Road in Kingston, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Application forms are also available at a number of tertiary institutions including, community and teachers’ colleges. Dr. Cowan noted that applicants should ensure that all forms are properly completed and submitted to the Council’s head office before the deadline, which has been extended to August 31.
“Once the application has been accepted, prospective candidates will undergo an interview process conducted by the Margaret Moody Management Committee and a decision is usually made before the end of October,” the Chairman informed, adding that successful applicants will be required to volunteer their services in areas within the disabled community.
Dr. Cowan noted that 10 persons have benefited from the scholarship since its inception and “have done extremely well in their academic pursuit.”
The Margaret Moody Trust was established in 2003 from funds bequeathed by the late Margaret Moody, a former matron at the University Hospital, who died in 1983.
