Manley Accord to be Reviewed

The bauxite/alumina industry Memorandum of Understanding, which is now entering its ninth year, is due for a full review, with the aim of fine tuning the objectives and mechanisms.
This was announced by the Minister of Information and Development, Donald Buchanan during his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives yesterday (June 5).
Mr. Buchanan also noted that the Government has been scrupulously honouring its share of what is known as the ‘Manley Accord’ (1998). He pointed to the tax free productivity incentive, stating that, “Productivity incentive schemes remain in place at all the companies and continue to promote worker participation, lift morale and reduce costs, increase savings, and improve all round productivity”.
The Minister also said “many labour contracts are due for renewal this year and, as expected, negotiations will be carried out in the spirit of the Memorandum of Understanding so as to continue to lay the foundation for the progressive development and expansion of the sector.”
