Manchester 4-H Clubs Parish Achievement Day Receives Support

February 2, 2009

The Full Story

A number of corporate entities in Manchester have provided much needed sponsorship for the Manchester 4-H Clubs Parish Achievement Day.
Singer Jamaica Limited, National Commercial Bank (NCB), Manchester Co-operative Credit Union, Pro Hardware, and the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) are some of the entities that have made commitments to provide sponsorship for the event.
The disclosure was made by Jamaica 4-H Clubs Parish Development Officer, Malonia Harper at a meeting of the 4-H Clubs Parish Advisory Council held at the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) Office in Mandeville on Thursday (Jan. 29).
“The funds are not coming in as we would want them to; however, NCB has committed two accounts, one for the Boy and the other for the Girl of the Year competition. Manchester Co-op Credit Union has committed an account for the public speaking winner, Pro Hardware has committed a tool kit for the farm machinery competition and CARDI has committed a goat for the goat care and management winner,” she informed.
Mrs. Harper said that Singer Jamaica Limited will be giving gifts for the home economic events and have asked the organization to indicate appropriate gifts for the different events in that area.
“They have already committed a sewing machine to the making of cushions and sewing kits to the pantry towel competition,” she added.
The Jamaica 4-H Clubs Parish Achievement Days are held annually at the parish, regional and national level. The events feature 4-H Clubs Clubites competing in various areas for prizes and awards in events such as cattle judging, goat care and management, rabbit care and management, vegetable production and grading, cake making and other culinary arts, uniform making, ‘trash to cash’, organic farming concept such as vermiculture, and compose heap.
Mrs. Harper said that she is in dialogue with a corporate entity to have them sponsor the poultry care and management competition and that where there is “a short fall and to make the activities more meaningful” to the students she will be asking individuals for contributions.
The Manchester 4-H Clubs, which currently has over 4000 clubities in schools and community clubs across the parish, will be having its annual Parish Achievement Day on March 5 at the Kirkvine Sports Club in Manchester.
