Major Infrastructure Upgrading to be carried out in Central Village

Cabinet has approved the award of two contracts valued at $78.8 million to Bacchus Engineering Works Limited to carry out extensive infrastructure upgrading in the Central Village area of St. Catherine.

The projects will be implemented by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) under the World Bank-funded Inner City Basic Services for the Poor Project (ICBSP). The scope of work includes putting in water supply systems, fire hydrants, storm and water drainage, and related community infrastructure; and road works.       

A total of $40 million has been allocated for works in the Andrews Lane community, while $38.8 million will be spent in Detroit.

“The projects are designed to provide access and improve the quality of water, sanitation, solid waste collection systems, electricity, and roads,” said Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, at today’s (June 13) Jamaica House press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister.

The ICBSP is being implemented in 12 pre-selected inner city communities in Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Catherine, St. James and Clarendon.

The project is centred on inner city renewal, with a focus on crime and violence prevention as a key priority.
