Major Clean-Up of Beaches in St. Elizabeth

November 19, 2004

The Full Story

The Office of National Reconstruction (ONR), in collaboration with the National Youth Service (NYS), and the Jamaica Combined Cadet Force, recently carried out a major clean-up of four beaches along the St. Elizabeth coastline, returning tonnes of seaweed back to the sea.
Tracey Hamilton, Communications Liaison in the ONR told JIS News that a combined team of approximately 200 young persons were joined by the Treasure Beach Women’s Group, The Treasure Beach Foundation, Treasure Beach.Net and community members to undertake the project.
They conducted a major clean-up of the Calabash, Frenchman’s Bay, Village Bay and Great Bay Beaches. Miss Hamilton said that the effort received funding from the Ridge to Reef Project, which helped to procure weed wackers, industrial gloves, wheel barrows, rakes and other tools. The use of two backhoes was also obtained, one of which was accessed with the help of the Mayor of Black River, Councillor Franklyn Witter.
The clean-up job, she explained, was made more difficult as the seaweed washed ashore by the hurricane stood at a height of almost 1 metre along the beaches, and was also mangled with debris, broken fishboats, broken benches and other extraneous material, which needed to be removed before the weeds could be returned to their natural habitat.
Miss Hamilton added that the St. Elizabeth communities were still faced with much work to restore the beaches to pre-Hurricane Ivan condition.
This exercise is one which the collaborating groups are undertaking every other week, at various locations around the island. Similar clean-ups have already been undertaken in Negril and Portland Cottage.
