Lucea Mayor Calls for Expansion of Rodent Control Programme

September 12, 2003

The Full Story

Mayor of Lucea, Lester Crooks, has called for an expansion of the Rodent Control Programme being implemented in Lucea, Hanover, to include other villages and towns in the parish.
He made special mention of the town of Hopewell, as a recent inspection of the market by a team from the Hanover Parish Council, showed that several large rats were in the facility.
Mayor Crooks made the request to the Hanover Health Department this week at the regular monthly meeting of the Hanover Parish Council, held in Lucea, Hanover.
Over 1,000 rodents have been killed over the last three months under the programme, and Acting Chief Public Health Inspector in the Department, Lloyd Stewart, told the meeting that the communities needed to be educated about the part they have to play to control the rodent population.
He emphasised that proper garbage disposal methods were essential in the process, adding that regular clearing of garbage by Western Parks and Markets must be carried out.
Chief Medical Officer of Health for the parish, Dr. Olufemi Ogunnowo, told the meeting that the increasing rodent population in the parish should not be taken lightly, and there should be a multi-sectoral approach to solving the problem.
He insisted that the problem should be tackled at both the premises of commercial entities and private houses throughout the parish. “So, if we clean the houses and we clean the commercial entities, then we would be in a better position to control the situation,” he said.
Mayor Crooks used the occasion to voice his concern about the health standards being observed in some commercial entities in the parish. He urged the Public Health Department to be very vigilant in this area, and to enforce the regulations under the Public Health Law. He also revealed that a team from the Bureau of Standards would be visiting the parish soon to inspect businesses within the parish, and to take the necessary action against those not operating within prescribed guidelines.
