The Full Story

Local charities Uplift Jamaica, Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment (URGE), and the SOS Children’s Village, were honoured at the International Reggae & World Music Awards (IRAWMA) ceremony held recently at the Columbia University auditorium in New York City. The three programmes, which target disadvantaged youth throughout the island, were presented with the IRAWMA humanitarian token named in honour of National Hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey.
“Tonight’s ceremony is dedicated to mothers and teens in crisis. We share their pain and pray that their suffering will be short lived and their hopes and dreams are realized sooner than later,” said Jamaican national Ephraim Martin, president of Martin’s Inter-culture, Inc., and executive producer of the show.
The 24th annual IRAWMA ceremony was produced in collaboration with Greenlit Caribbean Channel, which is an MTV Networks affiliate. The event recognizes the practitioners in the reggae and world beat music in 40 categories.
Other awardees were legendary singer Linton ‘Jackie’ Brown, Carol ‘Sister Carol’ East, Keeling Beckford of Keeling Records, Sean Paul, Malachi Smith, Beenie Man, and Orville Bennett, who were honored for their years of outstanding service to the pop music industry.
Jeptha ‘Luciano’ McClymont was the night’s big winner, taking home four golden statuettes including the Bob Marley award for entertainer of the year and for best male vocalist.
There were also outstanding performances from Frankie Paul, Dean Frazer, Mutabaruka, Half Pint and Rupert ‘Rupee’ Clarke of Barbados.
The show was hosted by Jamaican actress Donisha Prendergast; G.T. Taylor of Irie FM and Dahved Levy of WBLS, New York.
