Llandewey Police Station Being Refurbished

July 26, 2008

The Full Story

Refurbishing work is in progress at the LLandewey Police Station in St. Thomas, with completion set for December.
Minister of National Security, Senator Colonel Trevor MacMillan, accompanied by the Mayor of Morant Bay, Haniff Brown, and officer in charge of St. Thomas, Superintendent Marlon Nesbeth, toured the station on July 24 to observe the work being carried out.
The Minister also visited the Cedar Valley and Trinityville Police Stations in the parish.
Officer in charge of the Llandewey Police Station, Sergeant Sydney Gordon told JIS News that work at the station entailed repairs to the cells, bathroom facilities, storeroom, garage, and female quarters. Currently, the police officers are occupying a building owned by the Ministry of Health, which is situated close to the station.
Speaking with journalists at the station, Senator MacMillan said he was extremely pleased with the repairs being undertaken at the three stations. He said that other police stations are currently being repaired, with six new ones being constructed.
“I wish I could say that every station in Jamaica is being refurbished, but you know we have budget problems, and therefore priorities have to be set,” he said. Government has set aside money in the 2008/09 budget for the construction and upgrading of police stations islandwide.
The Minister also outlined plans to visit other stations as well as correctional centres, agencies, and departments under the Ministry, to get a first hand look at the conditions of these buildings.
“I want to see the conditions under which the people work and what their real problems are. We could see it on paper, but there is nothing like seeing it in real life,” he noted.
The Minister said he was impressed with the work being carried out by police officers in St. Thomas, which has resulted in a low crime rate in the parish. He attributed this to the good working relationship between the police and the citizens.
“The relationship that I see as the police drive past members of the communities, it is obvious that it is a very good relationship between the police and the community up here and that is absolutely critical,” he added.
