March 31, 2008

The Full Story

According to the 2008/09 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives, $24.4 million will be spent on the Expanding Education Horizons (EEH) Project.
The project, which is funded by the Government and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), seeks to improve literacy and numeracy in targeted schools; enhance the quality of interventions for out of school youth; and to increase stakeholder support.
Anticipated physical targets for the 2008/09 financial year include the continuation of clinical support to schools through visits to observe and demonstrate effective pedagogical practices to effect improvement in the areas of focus; prepare electronic portfolio on effective strategies in EEH schools; and to conduct the second Gain Achievement in Numeracy Test in 2008.
Other aims include conducting a survey on the use of numeracy software, measurement activities and mental computations, and to conduct classroom observations of grade 3 and 4 to support teachers in their school-based responsibilities.
Physical achievements up to January 2008 included a total of 17 of the 71 schools graduating from the programme, based on student performance and instructional and leadership practices; resource teachers, principals and classroom teachers were trained; and classroom libraries and reading corners were established in schools.
Other achievements included the installation of the Jamaica Administrative School Software in 71 project schools, and reading rooms were established in eight non-project secondary schools.
The project was started in December 2005 and is scheduled to be completed in September 2009.
