Libraries in South Florida to Highlight Jamaica’s Culture and Heritage

As Black History Month activities heat up, libraries in South Florida in the United States of America (USA), continue to celebrate the Jamaican culture and heritage, with several activities scheduled at various locations.
Jamaican artist and sculptor, Susan Alexander, will present her publication, ‘Jamaican Journey’ on February 7 at 11:00 a.m., at the Broward College South Regional Library, in Pembroke Pines.
The 108-page publication is a presentation of her paintings and sculptures, twinned with relevant poetry and prose of memorable scenes of her homeland, Jamaica.
On Monday, February 16 at 6:00 p.m., Jamaican artist, Karl Jerry Craig, will present a lecture on his work and experience, at a reception, held on the Library campus. He is the former Director of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, in Kingston.
Currently, some 32 pieces of his works are being displayed at the Library campus.
Another Jamaican artist, Colin Campbell, will also mount an exhibition of some 12 pieces of his work, at a launch reception on February 11, at the St. Lawrence Gallery, North Ocean Boulevard, in Fort Lauderdale.
The exhibition, which will last until the end of February, will showcase some 12 pieces of original oil paintings and gyclees of seascapes, reminiscent of locations in Jamaica and South Florida. Monetary donations will be presented to a local South Florida charity.
The Florida-based folkloric group, ‘Jamaica Folk Revue’, will present a series of concerts starting February 7, at 1:30 p.m., at the Coral Reef Library in Palmetto Bay. Performances will include selections of song, dance and drama.
On Saturday, February 21, at 10:00 a.m., the group will stage performances at the Naranja Library on South Dixie Highway, in South Miami.
Later that day at 2:30 p.m., they continue at the Homestead Library, in Homestead.
