‘Lavish Leather’ Workshop Next Month

Persons involved, or interested, in jewelry making, particularly leather, are invited to ‘Lavishly Leather 2012’, a jewelry making workshop focusing on leather craft and hosted by the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC).

The workshop will be held at the JBDC’s Incubator & Resource Centre, 76 Marcus Garvey Drive, on February 13 and 14 for the basic course, and February 16 and 17 for the intermediate course.

Highlighting focus areas of the workshop, Public Relations Officer at the JBDC, Sancia Campbell, said that the sessions will cover trends in leather, jewelry making, developing leather craft, costing and pricing and intellectual property protection.

“Focus will be placed on how you develop your design or product from stage one to two; how and where you source your materials; and pricing of products, to ensure that you do not under-price or overprice,” she explained.

“We want to build the capacity of our micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs)…we want them to not only be able to design their products, but do so according to both international and local standards,” Miss Campbell noted. She added that it is important for persons to improve their craft, in order to become more competitive in the global market.

She said that the workshop will include a practical, hands-on component, where participants will be asked to construct a cuffed bracelet and design the template for a key ring.
