Lands to be Identified to Replace Sandy Bay Cemetery

The Hanover Parish Council is seeking to identify lands to establish a cemetery to replace the Sandy Bay facility.
His Worship the Mayor of Lucea and Chairman of the Hanover Parish Council, Councillor Lloyd Hill, in an interview with JIS News, said that the Parish Council is in discussions with the National Housing Trust (NHT) to gain access to property that the entity owns in Mosquito Cove and Jericho.
He said that lands in other adjoining areas are also being looked at for that purpose.
Mayor Hill indicated that once the appropriate lands have been identified, approval will be sought from the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) for its use as a cemetery.
A stop order has been placed on burials at the Sandy Bay cemetery since June 1, due to lack of space for more burials. The order, for the official closure of the cemetery, will be gazetted.
Mayor Hill informed that the Parish Council has been notifying the community of the move for some time, so as to avoid any inconvenience.
“The perception is that it (the cemetery) is full and we have been trying for some time now to make the necessary arrangements for its closure, because we know that this process takes time. So we did not really wait until the last spot was taken. We started the preparations from before,” he noted.
In the meantime, he has advised residents, needing burial services, to utilise cemeteries in Lucea and the adjoining district of Hopewell.
