Minister of State for Project Implementation and Service Delivery in the Office of the Prime Minister, Daryl Vaz, says land and home ownership give every individual an enormous sense of pride and accomplishment and so are regarded as almost sacrosanct among most Jamaican families.
He is of the view that every Jamaican deserves to own a piece of the proverbial ‘rock’ that is Jamaica. This ownership, he noted, not only translates into wealth that can be used to secure a better standard of living, but can engender improved social order, a greater sense of community and a commitment to moving Jamaica forward.
Mr. Vaz was speaking recently at the opening of the new offices of the Real Estate Board, on Surbiton Road in Kingston.
At the same time, Mr. Vaz emphasised that the ownership of real estate must be done within the context of an orderly and structured framework, that protects the rights of individuals and safeguards the fundamental pillars of the Jamaican economy. Mr. Vaz told members of the Real Estate Board, that they had a responsibility to ensure that the highest standards of professional conduct are maintained. He commended the Board on its plans for the fiscal year 2008/2009, noting that he was impressed with the emphasis to be placed on the amendment to the Registration Strata Titles Act and the Real Estate (Dealers and Developers) Act.
Mr. Vaz also commended the leadership and members of the Board, for their hard work over their 20 years as an organisation. He has given his commitment to support the Board in delivering and realising its objectives.
